After many hours of research and review of twenty Chromebooks currently available on the American market, we have selected the top 6 among them, among which our favorite goes to the Asus Chromebook Flip C434 .
It contains all that is best in terms of the Chromebook at the moment: design, lightness, speed, power, battery life, touch screen and tablet mode, for a price well below many mid-range Windows PCs .
The best cheap Chromebooks
Chromebooks being inexpensive basic, their entry-level displays prices that may seem ridiculous at first.
However, for a minimal investment, we have selected two models whose performance is largely up to the tasks for everyday use in a private setting, the second can even already be used in a professional setting. Both, in any case, will make ideal student computers .
Acer Spin 311 For Work : Best cheap
The first of this selection is very recent on the market, but already has an amazing price / quality ratio.
The quality of construction is undeniable, with a stylish PC but, above all, extremely robust. Its hull has been designed to withstand drops up to 1.22 m, while its keyboard is not only protected against splashing, but also against the tearing of the keys. That’s why this Chromebook already seems to have some success in American schools.
It’s an 11 inch model with an HD touch screen. However, contrary to what its name indicates (the Spin range of Acer is dedicated to reversible Chromebooks), it is not possible to use it in tablet mode. Note, however, that for a not much larger investment, the Acer 511 For Work is available, with a reversible screen and a directly supplied Acer Active Pen stylus.
Side components, it is one of the models to integrate an AMD processor (the AMD A4-9120C). This makes it an extremely fast PC in web browsing, and no application is a problem. It also has a RAM of 4 GB and a memory of 32 GB, expandable via MicroSD. As for its autonomy, announced at 10 am, it seems to be true.
On the other hand, on the connectivity side, as it is a very recent model, it does not include the HDMI port, but has the advantage of offering, in addition to the two USB 3.1 ports, two USB-C ports. which makes it easy to use a hub.
In use, its keyboard looks comfortable (at least for an 11-inch model), and its screen Corning Gorilla Glass (having undergone anti-microbial treatment also appreciated in schools) provides a good visual comfort.
It is a Chromebook particularly powerful and resistant, considering its low price. Although it will be particularly suitable for the use of a (young) student, it is also ideal to carry everywhere easily, between its robustness, its small size and its good autonomy.
Asus Chromebook C423 (NA-BV0001) : Cheap alternative
While it is offered at an even more attractive price, here is an Asus model that stands out as much for the quality of its aluminum construction as for its finesse.
This is, this time, a 14-inch computer. On the other hand, its small price has a cost: it too presents a screen HD (1366 x 768 pixels). If it was optimal on an 11.6-inch screen, it is less so, in 2019, on a 14-inch screen.
If you are a pixel addict, this model might not be happy. In any case, that’s why he could not take first place in this section.
Although it does not have 360 ° hinges allowing it to be used as a tablet, it nevertheless has the advantage of being able to open at 180 °, which makes it a popular support in schools or conferences, for example where screen sharing can be an asset.
Side components, there is nothing wrong, especially considering its price: Intel Dual-Core processor Celeron N3350, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of memory, expandable via microSD.
However, we draw your attention to the existence of an 8GB version of RAM, under Pentium N4200 , for a price that remains very affordable. If you have intensive use of your PC (for professional use, for example), we can only commit to turn to him because it will be a little faster and, above all, more efficient multitasking.
Users report that its keyboard is very pleasant to use and that the touch pad is responsive.
Finally, with its autonomy, it ranks among the good average Chromebooks, offering ten hours of use.
In the end, here is a Chromebook that should seduce you with its overall quality, design and performance, but the mere display HD could put you off.
Best mid-range Chromebooks
In this category, it is possible to find models whose components allow without worry more use (as one would expect from a computer used in the professional setting), while leaving models 11 inches, a little restrictive comfort level.
Asus C523 (NA-A20033) : Best Mid-range Chromebook
It is sometimes very comfortable, for intensive use, to have a wider screen. From this point of view, the Asus C523 is without a doubt the most attractive proposition of the moment.
First, it stands out from the competition in the field being one of the first models to incorporate NanoEdge technology, which allows, thanks to the optimization of the screen edges, to offer a 15.6-inch screen in a computer whose format is closer to the 14-inch models (it is not much bigger than the 14-inch model that we present to you soon after), which makes it more easily transportable, for an extremely reduced weight of 1, 4 kg!
It incorporates a full HD screen that is not only tactile, but also open able at 180 °, which is often very popular with professionals for presentations.
Its components, as we announced, are sufficiently powerful to support you professionally: Intel Pentium N4200 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 32 GB of memory expandable via microSD.
Connectivity level, if it does not have HDMI port, it still embeds two USB-C ports that will easily allow you to use a hub, two USB 3.0 ports, and a mini-jack.
And if its backlit keyboard is considered very comfortable by users (especially because of its good space optimization), it is even more of the touchpad Corning Gorilla, extremely responsive.
Finally, despite its 1080p screen and power, it has a real autonomy of around 12 hours, making it, once again, one of the most enduring models on the market.
In the end, this Chromebook is perfect for those who need a wider screen, whether for visual comfort at work or to watch a movie comfortably, especially since it does not embark any defects usually present on 15-inch models (clutter and heaviness).
Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1HT-P1S7): Mid-range alternative!
We return to Acer, which has earned a reputation for excellence in Chromebooks. His latest model 14 inches (sometimes called Acer Chromebook 514) is still honoring his reputation, offering a computer whose quality makes him flirt with the high-end, for a very reasonable investment.
With its aluminum chassis, it has a very simple and elegant look that is reminiscent of the MacBook Air.
It has a 14-inch Full HD touch screen, with a matte anti-glare coating (this is rare in the world of touch). It therefore allows good visibility, even in a very sunny room. On the other hand, we must admit that its colorimetry is not the most faithful: a little dull, the colors lack of shine.
Its keyboard is very ergonomic: the large keys are well spaced and offer excellent typing quality, besides the area around the touchpad is optimal for resting wrists. In addition, this time, it is backlit! Its Corning Gorilla Glass touchpad is extremely responsive.
Its components and connectivity bring it closer to the previous Acer (Intel Pentium N4200 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 32 GB of memory expandable via microSD and two USB 3.0 ports, two USB-C and a 3.5 mm mini jack ).
The sound is correct (although, of course, headphones are always preferable). It is simply unfortunate that Acer, as often, has placed the speakers at the bottom of the device, which stifles the sound, depending on the coating on which you put the PC.
Finally, the autonomy is amazing for a computer to 1080p: you can count on nearly a dozen hours of use before having to reload! It is a very mobile computer, from the top of its 1.4 kg!
Ultimately, here’s a solid, visually attractive, powerful and enduring Chromebook, which will prove very practical in everyday life, even for professional use. And if this model interests you but you do not need a configuration so advanced, know that there is also a 4GB version of RAM , at a great price.
The best High-end Chromebooks!
In this last section, Chromebooks demonstrate their full potential, with hardware power enabling Chrome OS to flourish.
The two models we selected stand out in the market because of the quality of their finishes and their range of features.
Asus Chromebook Flip C434 : The Best High End
If Asus already dominated the market thanks to the excellent Flip C302CA , his little brother, the C434, quickly and efficiently took over.
It always includes a premium design, with a frame made entirely of aluminum and quality finishes. And if the C302’s 12.5-inch display has been replaced by a 14-inch model, the Chromebook hardly changes in size, because it also incorporates NanoEdge display technology and very thin edges (only 5 mm). It offers an ultra-compact format that ranks it in the category of 13 inches and weighs only 1.45 kg!
We find a full HD touch screen well calibrated, both in its colorimetry and brightness. Moreover, it is always a reversible 360 ° model.
The smoothness of the Chromebook also allows to think that we have a real tablet in the hands. Its ErgoLift hinge is very fluid, and once the screen is open, it allows the keypad to be slightly raised for better typing comfort (the keyboard itself is considered one of the most comfortable, with responsive keys and sufficiently spaced).
This also allows a better distribution of sound, because a small space is created under the screen. This is a very nice Chromebook for multimedia use.
Its basic version, which we recommend, is already extremely powerful, with its Intel M3 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of memory expandable via microSD. It presents, in this configuration, an autonomy of more than 10 hours, and turns out to be fast and effective even in multitasking . The most demanding of you can nevertheless turn to an even more powerful version, with a Core i5 processor .
Its connection includes, in addition to the microSD port, two USB-C ports, a USB 3.0 port and a 3.5mm mini-jack. No HDMI port, so, but this is the price of its extreme finesse (and a hub easily solves the problem).
Ultimately, this Chromebook has it all: light, compact, comfortable, stylish, enduring, powerful, tactile and reversible. If you work long hours on your Chromebook, this is definitely the model we recommend.
HP Chromebook 14 : The high-end alternative
We finish with one of the most popular models in the USA, and finally available from us.
On the design side, we are clearly in the top of the range, with its white ceramic outer shell and the external aluminum edges. The imitation leather coating on the keyboard is also very classy, but also very comfortable.
This is, as for the Asus C302 mentioned above, a 14 inch screen. By cons, we must admit that the screen edges, this time are very present. Admittedly, it allows to integrate two speakers that, thanks to their location, provide a clear and powerful, but it denotes a bit in the current configuration of PCs.
However, the 2K display is very convincing on a screen of this size, and this Chromebook is ideal for multimedia use. This is reinforced by the ratio 3: 2, which makes it a model a little higher than wide, which is very appreciated, especially, for a work of office automation.
Here, no reversibility, but a complete convertibility: thanks to the two magnetic notches, you can quickly detach the screen from the keyboard, to keep only one tablet. It is also accompanied by a touch sensitive pen, which you can easily keep permanently through the notch provided for this purpose on the side.
Side components, it is very similar to its rival Asus, with an Intel Core M3, 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB of memory expandable via MicroSD. It is therefore extremely powerful in office and navigation, although some of you might be interested in the version under Core i5 . Autonomy is still very good, even if a little weaker: about 8 hours.
The connection, on the other hand, is a bit poorer, since it only includes two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm mini-jack (no HDMI port or USB).
In use, its keyboard is comfortable, but the pad lacks a little precision, especially if you are used to the Cornilla Glass pads that are currently most often on high-end models.
In the end, it is a qualitative Chromebook, which, in addition to its great performance in navigation and office (where the ratio 3: 2 is very significant), will certainly please those who want a multimedia use. However, its edges a little too present, its connection a little less, and pad less reactive, led us to favor its competitor Asus.
